Young Gen are often asked to come along and perform at a variety of local events from charity fundraisers to the Mayor’s Dinner. Unfortunately it was often difficult to accommodate such requests because Young Gen is not a ‘stage school’ or a choir. Young Gen exists to give young people first hand experience of the process of putting on a show, so the society is usually busy rehearsing that show leaving very little time to rehearse for a one off performance elsewhere.
However, Young Gen’s reputation is such that demand for their services has steadily increased year on year and it always seemed such a shame when the society had to decline an offer to perform. It was decided, therefore, to launch a Performers Group who would be pre-rehearsed and ready to perform at an event whenever a request came in.
Those members who are in Year 9 (13 and over) and who have performed in at least one Young Gen production can audition for the Performers Group once a year. They regularly meet to rehearse solo and ensemble songs which can be quickly put together as a set piece for an event. This flexibility has meant that they are able to adapt to most requests.
Young Gen are now able to accept requests to perform at charity events for free and at other local events in return for donations to Chelmsford Young Generation Amateur Society, a registered charity itself – this money goes towards the funding of future shows or to improving the performance facilities at Young Gen headquarters.
Young Gen Performers recently performed at a Hylands House fundraiser when they sang songs from their recent production of Les Miserables.
