Audition FAQs
AUDITION FAQ’S
Do I audition alone?
Each audition is different, but as a general rule, yes you do for a named character. Ensemble auditions are usually done as a group.
What can I audition for?
You can audition for a named part or ensemble. One audition is usually adequate; however, you may wish to audition for two contrasting characters in which case you can also add “to be considered for”. Everyone who auditions will be required for the ensemble part of the audition to sing the audition song.
How much will I need to learn?
You will be required to learn your chosen characters dialogue, sing your characters song. You won’t be able to read your audition from the script unless the audition process is by way of a workshop. If you choose to go for ensemble only, you will learn a song at the pre-audition music calls.
Do I have to tick ensemble?
If you’re not successful in auditioning for your named part but would still like to take part in the show, then tick the ensemble box.
Do I need the correct uniform/rehearsal clothes to audition?
No, you don’t need this for the audition, but if you’re successful you will need to wear rehearsal clothes which will be detailed after auditions. Our main uniform items are; Young Gen t-shirt (all members have these, and all new members will be provided with one as part of their membership), plain black shorts or leggings and trainers for girls, black joggers and trainers for boys. Jeans are not allowed unless needed for a particular production. All hair should be tied back at all times and jewellery removed. All other clothing should be black i.e. hoodies and cardigans. Please don’t buy anything until information is sent out regarding requirements for each show.
What do I need to wear?
Something comfortable that you feel confident in, comfortable shoes are important too. There is no need to dress up as a character as this will not influence the audition panel in any way, but you may do so if you feel it will help you.
Who will be on the audition panel?
The director, the director’s assistant(s) and the musical director. Depending on the production, there may also be two other people in the audition room to “read in” as well as one member of the Young Gen committee who is a silent observer.
Do I need to act in my audition?
The director will want to see your acting skills and what you can bring to the character.
What is a music call?
This is led by the musical director and is essential for learning the songs.
What do I need to bring with me?
You need to bring some snacks, lunch, and plenty of water/drinks.
How much will it cost?
For non-members a non-refundable fee of £40 is payable to become a member of Young Gen, this needs to be paid before you are able to audition. For everyone auditioning, the show fee of £120 which includes the script hire is also payable before audition day by BACS (the closing date for all audition form submission and the audition fee payment is usually 6 days before audition day). Please note those unsuccessful on audition day will receive a full refund of the show fee paid.
Does everyone get in?
No. Places are very limited for some shows, so not everybody will be successful, but that doesn’t mean you can’t join in with workshops, summer school, parties and other events during the year. You could also offer to be a “stand in”, which is a good way of gaining some experience for the future.
How will I find out the results of the audition?
All auditionees will be contacted within 24hours.
Do I need to come regularly?
Yes. If you audition for any Young Gen show you are expected to give 100% commitment. This means attending all rehearsals as on the call sheet.
